buchanon boogie woogie

A performance intallation collaboration with Lynn Marie Kirby, a system investigating public works, counter-surveillance, and a non-utilitarian interface.

Installation Details:

Part 1: The performers research the emergency water supply grid of the city of San Francisco. Using public documents acquired from the city and state (both online and hardcopy), the systems path, function, flow, and physical load limits. A route is drawn based on this study between the performers homes. Documenting their walk with a video camera, the performers leave their homes at 9AM and walk for twenty-seven minutes until they meet at a predetermined spot on Buchannon Street.

Part 2 A computer interface is developed which will allow the performers to navigate the video footage of the first part of the performance. Controls are made to allow the ‘attention’ of the video frame to shift, wander, or be blown out. The videos are archived and split into sections indicating the cardinal directions.

Part 3 Verbal directions indicating how to navigate the system are created from the text of the aforementioned research documents. The interface is modified to respond to changes in sound amplitude. In a gallery setting, the performers control the video and audio playback by reading the directions into microphones connected to their computers.
